From May 29 through 31, Gulu Women Economic Development & Globalization (GWED-G) led efforts in collaboration and partnership with the Gulu District COVID-19 Taskforce to provide relief food and non-food item distribution to households directly supporting over 1,500 residents. GWED-G also distributed hand washing stations to over 40 public spaces. This distribution was signed off and approved by the Gulu LCV, Ojara Martin Mapenduzi, and District Taskforce chairperson, Santo Okot Lapolo.

Some items were personally delivered to people living with disabilities.

Vulnerable families across the country have been suffering heightened economic strain amid Uganda’s COVID-19 lockdown, restricting their ability to earn income to feed their families. These families also lack other basic needs like hygiene items which are crucial for their protection against the virus. The Northern Region has been particularly affected by an influx of COVID-19 cases, especially in Amuru and Gulu districts.

A Rapid Needs Assessment was conducted to identify the most urgent cases of food insecurity.

GWED-G conducted a rapid needs assessment for Gulu Municipality covering Bar-dege, Laroo, Layibi and Pece Divisions to establish most urgent needs among vulnerable urban population struggling with poverty. Households that received relief items comprised single mothers, child-headed families, female small business owners, pregnant and lactating women, elderly, persons with disabilities, and people living with HIV.

Alongside the Gulu District Taskforce, GWED-G conducted food relief distribution provided families with posho, beans, cooking oil and salt. We were also able to provide soap, hand sanitizer, and menstrual hygiene items for menstruating females. Relief items were distributed proportionately according to household size.

Relief packages were organized to respect physical distancing guidelines as much as possible.

In a bid to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we were able to distribute hand washing facilities to 40 public places, including high-traffic sub-county markets and sub-county health centres in an effort to protect healthcare workers and patients.

Beneficiaries received various items including maize flour, beans, cooking oil, salt, and more.

GWED-G would like to extend its deepest gratitude to AIDS Healthcare Foundation for providing the financial support to make this distribution a possibility. Thank you!
